You cannot go wrong with either!

The Mesmerizing Color of Butterfly Pea Flower

The butterfly pea flower comes from a Southeast Asian flower that grows in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Today, however, it is found in places all over.

This tea is made from the blue flowers of the Clitoria ternatea plant and is naturally caffeine-free.

Reasons why we love butterfly pea flower?

There are many, but the ability of this tea to change colors is what draws us in close. Butterfly pea flower is filled with anthocyanins—to narrow it down more, phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are responsible for butterfly pea flower’s blue color, as well as a variety of health benefits—which we’ll dive into later.

Butterfly pea flower tea changes color depending on the pH. When the tea is steeped in hot water the dried blue butterfly pea flowers immerse their color, creating a gorgeous and tantalizing deep blue hue.

However, if you were to add in a little lemon juice (chemistry 101), you change the acidity and the tea color will change from blue to purple. If you were to take it one step further and make the tea even more acidic, the color will change to magenta or pink. What a fun and mesmerizing trick!

The Magical Benefits of Butterfly Pea Flower

Anthocyanins have antioxidant properties and butterfly pea flower tea is filled with a wealth of them.

Studies have shown that these can help support healthy cholesterol levels, healthy blood sugar regulation, and healthy body weight, as well as a healthy metabolism of fat. Butterfly pea flower also contains a specific antioxidant that helps to promote collagen growth and skin cell elasticity and is high in vitamin C.

More youthful glow, anyone?

A bonus for our brains—butterfly pea flower promotes brain function and memory, helps to reduce anxiety, promotes blood flow, and improves heart health.

What’s not to all-the-way love?

Froth and Ice How You Like

I know some of us may have a handheld frother at home, or even an automatic milk frother, but for those of us that don’t, I have a few ways to ensure you too can have the best butterfly milk tea right at home!

One easy way is to use your French press to create those frothy bubbles and creamy texture we adore. Start by warming your milk on the stovetop on low and once little bubbles start to form along the sides, pour your milk into a French press and go to work. Plunger it a few times and violà—you’ve created your very own frothed milk!

No French press? No problem? A go-to, fool-proof, easy method that turns out great is to make your frothed milk in the microwave and utilize a jar. Yes—you heard me right—the microwave!

Start by taking about 1/2 cup of your choice of milk and pour it into a small or medium mason jar, ensuring you still have at least half the jar left with open space. Put the lid on and shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds. Take the lid off and place the jar into your microwave for 30-45 seconds.

It takes only minutes to create your own frothed milk with its sweet, creamy texture that takes any latte to the next level! If you prefer to serve it up chilled—no problem. This delicious butterfly milk tea recipe can easily be poured over ice and enjoyed as such.
