When I think about the mission of Plum Deluxe, I often think about myself. Self-care is an important topic for me. But I also often think about gifts and treating others, as well as treating yourself.
Today, I’d like you to think about celebrating today by helping out a stranger on World Wish Day, which is coming up on April 29th.
If you aren’t familiar, the Make-a-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions (e.g., progressive, degenerative or malignant conditions). These wishes can be anything from making a child an honorary policeman for a day (their first wish granted, ever) to meeting celebrities to amazing trips around the world. Several airlines allow you to donate frequent flier miles directly to Make-a-Wish to help the latter happen.
Helping Others is a Way to Treat Yourself
You no doubt have had a satisfying feeling after donating to a charity, and that isn’t just because of the tax write-offs. Research has very consistently confirmed the mental benefits of being a charitable giver, no matter how big or small. A research project by the U.S. Trust revealed that 43% more people who donated to charities said their lives were very “happy” compared with those who do not. Studies point towards our desire “to do the right thing” and a specific study (Schlenker, 1980; Walster, Berschield & Walster, 1973) found that we actually have a lowered self-image when we are not charitable givers.
Donate Extra Frequent Flyer Miles. Pitch in a Dollar. Make a Wish.
I firmly endorse everyone’s right to choose the charities that they support – it should be a very personal, individual decision, not to be taken lightly. Put your charitable dollars where they will have the most meaning for you.
Having said that, the beautiful thing about the Make-A-Wish program is the option to donate leftover frequent flyer miles. You know, the ones left over from your last upgrade that are doing nothing but gathering dust in an otherwise unused mileage account. You can, of course, also make a monetary donation.
So, if the cause resonates with you, please join us this year in celebrating World Make-A-Wish Day.
This year, 10,000 wish kids and their families will travel for a Make-A-Wish® experience. That's 50,000 roundtrip tickets or 2.5 billion frequent flier miles.
In honor of World Wish Day®, the day of the wish that inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish, visit wish.org/tickets and donate miles and dollars – and help wish kids take flight.
