Tea of the Month, March 2016 Spring Hickory

Thanks for being a part of our magical tea of the month club, where every month you receive a new seasonal blend from Plum Deluxe.

Our theme this month is providing some sweetness and grounding nourishment. While other tea companies are celebrating “spring comes early,” I go with what the tea tells me, and the tea says we need a bit more support before we go into full on spring florals!

During this month we transition from winter to spring, and the many plants and herbs in our teas start to gather strength in their core for putting down roots in the season ahead. This warming, nourishing tea soothes any lingering worries this season of change may bring. We love playing with oolong tea blends, which caffeinated subscribers received this month – it provides a bold base to work from in creating the tea theme.

Balance the nutty flavors (pecan, almond) with honey and/or cream that naturally accent the cinnamon and orange notes. And, while you’re enjoying it, I’d like for you to consider the aroma of the pecan – what memories and thoughts does it bring up for you? I’ve been hearing a lot of stories about it, so I am curious what it does for you.

More about this topic in this month’s teaser podcast:

Note! All of the “Herbal Tea” packets are caffeine free. We had 4 or 5 packets that were mistakenly labeled (we had to print off our own labels as we ran short last minute and made a printing error). Apologies!

Each month, we take a sample from the first batch of our tea of the month club tea, set our intentions, and ask the tea to tell us what we need to know. Tea club members get the full reading, along with lots of other community benefits. Enjoy this summary!

This month’s tea is light but earthy, reminiscent of the earth waking up around us here in the Northern Hemisphere and perfect for the upcoming Spring Equinox. If last month was a time of budding creativity, this is now the season of birth and growth and action.

While the tea steeped, I went to pull a card from Shelley Hawkins’ Monday Wisdoms deck, and this is what literally jumped out at me:

“GENUINE: The genuine in you is not something you can reach for, act as if, achieve, or even fully ask. Your genuine silently bellows like an ever-burning dare, a sweet beckoning, to drop veil after veil, revealing who has been there all along.”

As I drank the tea and thought of this group, I tried to keep the idea of the Genuine in mind. It certainly made this month’s reading even more intriguing. So, on to the cup!

The first thing I want to mention is that, as I turned the cup over and around, some of the leaves inside shifted, changing their position within the cup. The message is this: What you bring about this season could cause a change in your focus or a shift in your current life path. That’s why it’s so important to get in touch with your Genuine!

At the bottom of the cup was a clump of leaves in the shape of a fetus, a symbol of creativity and new life. As the bottom of the cup represents the past, this symbol is pointing back to the ideas that began germinating within you last month.

In the middle of the cup, which represents the present, is an adorable young dragon, newly hatched and symbolizing the idea brought forth. At the top of the cup — in the future — is a full-grown dragon. The leaves are repeating this particular symbol for a reason: dragons embody wisdom and prosperity, both of which grow over time.

The full message of the cup, then, is this: If you can awaken to your Genuine and listen to what it wants you to bring forth into the world this spring, you will find yourself growing in wisdom and prosperity.

This tea is just begging for a biscotti! Here’s an orange one that we’d like for you to try. We also have an almond biscotti recipe up on our blog.

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp brandy
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp orange juice
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup pecans, toasted, cooled, and chopped
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Combine sugar, butter, brandy, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla in a large bowl, stirring until smooth. Stir in pecans and eggs. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt until just combined. Cover dough and chill for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Using moistened hands, shape dough into 2 (10-by-4-inch) loaves on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 25 minutes or until pale golden. Transfer loaves to a wire rack and cool for 15 minutes.

Using a serrated knife, cut loaves into 1/2-inch slices. Place slices cut side down on baking sheet; bake 9 minutes. Turn slices over and bake for 9 minutes more or until golden. Cool completely on wire racks. Store at room temperature in an airtight container up to a week.

There are many teashop updates happening this month!

We recently took down quite a few teas from the shop – right now the only limited edition tea we have right now is the Chocolate Mint Dessert Tea. It has real chocolate in it, so it melts – and it will come down from the shop at the end of March.
