So it’s your birthday and you want to celebrate! That’s either a really exciting or really stressful idea, right? It doesn’t necessarily have to be stressful, though — after all, birthday parties are supposed to be enjoyable. However, that definitely means something different to everybody.
You might be somebody who loves being the center of attention and surrounded by people, or you might be somebody whose ideal day is curling up in a chair with a good book — and both of those things are okay. You just have to figure out what works for you.
There are four factors that contribute to birthday party complexity: number of people, cost, level of effort, and distance from home. The best part is that these things are all within your control.
Number of People
The first question to ask is, exactly how many people do you want to celebrate with? You might just want to celebrate with you — and you know what? That means you get to make all of the decisions, which sounds like you are 100% guaranteed to enjoy your birthday. You might want to enjoy your birthday with just your significant other, which makes trip planning much easier if you want to leave the state or country. You might want to gather your 10 best friends together for a night of fun and reminiscing over old times. Or you might want to open up your phone contact list and find everybody who has impacted your life in the last year and invite them along on the adventure.
This is most important question to answer and will determine where the planning goes from here.
The second most important question to ask is, what is your budget? Are you paying for the whole party yourself or is it going to be supplemented by your friends? Do you want to keep it small or pull out all the stops to impress people? At the end of the day, the most important question is what can you afford to pay, and no matter what the answer to that is, you can definitely make it a birthday party to be remembered.
Distance from Home
Once you know how many people you are inviting and how much money is in the budget, the next question is, how far do you want to travel from home, if you even want to leave home at all? Having a party at home is comfortable, easy to get to, and means that you have full control, but it’s not always the most practical option. Having a party outside of the house doesn’t necessarily mean that you need a large budget to work with — there are places you can go around town that are free, like the park or a beach or a playground. There are an infinite number of options, you just have to get creative.
Level of Effort
The final question is, do you actually have time in your day-to-day life right now to plan an extravagant party, or does something simple fit the bill? If you find yourself with a lot of time, you can make your party fancy by considering personalizing invitations, buying small party favors, and decorating the venue to feel festive. If you find yourself with minimal time, you can send out an Evite, tell people to bring a dish, and choose your favorite Pandora station.
